About This Volume
Once a year, on the first hard frost, somebody knocks on every door in Harlan Gap and asks how many people live there.
You're supposed to lie. My mother never told me that part.
I knock on strangers' doors for the Census Bureau. I've asked that question four thousand times, and I've spent twelve years wishing somebody would just answer me straight. So when it knocked on my mother's door, I did.
One. Just me.
Then a chair scraped in the kitchen, and a man I didn't know said my name.
The Count is a folk horror serial about a town that has lied to the thing at the door for longer than anybody can remember, and the woman who told it the truth.
