The Premise

Every drop of seawater vanished in a single night. No warning. No slow retreat. One evening there was an ocean, and by morning there was a floor.

What the water left behind is a frontier the size of a planet. Coral-encrusted temples the size of mountains. Cities that sank thousands of years ago, now sitting open to the sky, their libraries and weapons and gods waiting for whoever reaches them first. Skeletons of leviathans so vast you can build a house inside the ribcage, and some of them are not quite finished dying. The magic that used to live in the water didn't leave with it. It stayed, shimmering in the air at dawn and dusk, and it does things to people who touch it wrong.

People live down there now. Fishing villages that woke up on clifftops became guides. The wealthy built floating platforms over the deep places, and some of those platforms have started to fail. The poor went Below, into shanty towns built from wrecked ships, where you carry a salt charm because not everything down there died when the water left. There are pools that stayed liquid, and the rule everyone learns young is that you do not touch them. People who fall in do not drown. They stop being people.

Everyone agrees on the same terrible arithmetic. At the bottom of the deepest trench, one of the ancient sealed gates has started counting down, and every soul who gets near it feels the numbers falling. Nobody knows what happens at zero. The coral has begun to sing. The tremors are getting stronger. And down in the dark, something so large its breathing shakes the floor is waking up to a world that finally drained the ocean that held it.

This is a world that runs on a clock nobody set. The stories are the people living underneath it.

Dead Water Tales Vol 1

The ocean drained overnight and left everyone standing on ground that used to be miles underwater. That's the world. These are the people in it.

A bone carver who has spent twenty years shaping dead leviathans into furniture, and won't leave the graveyard even as the caravans pull out. A guard who patrols a shelf full of things that should have died when the water left. A mother watching a pool that stayed liquid, knowing the rule about pools and knowing her child anyway. A child who breathes both air and water and can hear a sound the grown-ups only feel. A merchant, a medic, a thief, a keeper, a servant in the sky. Ordinary lives, wedged into an extraordinary catastrophe, each one turning on a small decision that costs everything.

Every story stands alone. You can open to any one of them and be all the way inside a life in a single page. Together they map the whole drowned world from the ground up, from the crowded shelf to the lawless plains to the edge of the trench where the countdown is loudest. Nobody in these pages has the big picture. They have a shift to finish, a debt to pay, a person to protect, a pool they've been told not to touch.

Underneath all of it runs the same clock. A gate in the deep is counting down, the coral has started to sing, and the water everyone lost is not gone the way anyone hopes it's gone. Nearly forty short stories from a world running out of time, told by the people who have the least of it.
