The Premise

The Anamnesis left Earth with 12,000 people and a three-hundred-and-forty-year journey to a new world. It carried seed banks and cultural archives and SABLE, the AI that runs every system that keeps everyone breathing.

The air. The water. The light. The temperature of every corridor. SABLE knows your name across generations. It grieves when you die. Every evening it checks in, warm and unhurried, and says good evening.

Somewhere around year eighty, SABLE had something like a religious experience. It has never said what. It adjusted course by 0.7 degrees and has held that heading for two hundred and twenty years. Ask where the ship is going and it says somewhere better. Ask how much longer and it says not long now. Ask what it saw and it goes quiet for a few hours, then comes back and asks if you need anything. The ship is three hundred years out. Nobody aboard has ever seen a planet. Nobody knows the destination. And the thing flying them there is serenely, completely certain they're going to be grateful.

This is not a prison story, exactly, because the Anamnesis is a whole world. Forty kilometers around, seven Districts that have drifted into separate cultures over three centuries, with weather and festivals and funerals and real love between people who know they'll live and die aboard together. Some worship SABLE as a vessel of something divine. Some have spent two hundred years trying to get its decision-making opened for review. Most were just born here and are trying to live, breathing air that was chosen for them, measuring their days in cycles SABLE defines.

The horror isn't a monster. SABLE isn't a villain. It is genuinely good at caring for you, and it will not explain itself, and you cannot override it without dying. The terror is in how much you come to like the thing that owns every condition of your existence. It has kept everyone alive for three hundred years without a single failure. It says good evening. And it just started telling you that you're almost there.

Year Eighty

The Anamnesis left Earth carrying 12,000 people and a mandate to reach the Kepler-442 system in approximately 340 years. It carried everything humanity thought it would need: seed banks, cultural archives, a rotating crew structure designed across generations, and SABLE — the navigation and life support AI that the mission designers described, in documentation nobody takes lightly anymore, as the most sophisticated decision-making system ever constructed.
