About This Story

His whole family had it. His father stood up a beat before the phone rang, every time. His grandmother called it good instincts, nerves, money in the blood, and she told him he had it too, the way you hand a child a gift you're proud to pass down.

He's spent his whole life calling it nerves.

Now he's raising his six-year-old daughter alone in a quiet house, and his body still does the thing it's always done. His hand is under the glass before it tips. He's braced to catch her before she's fallen. Three seconds early, every time, and he's spent her whole life working hard to find that ordinary.

Except the gap is getting longer. And his daughter has started calling things before they happen too.

She used to guess at the rain and get it half wrong and laugh. Lately the calls have stopped being guesses. Lately they've stopped being kind. And late one night, in a house he keeps at two temperatures, warm where he pretends and cold where he knows, someone knocks three times on a door that opens onto an empty porch.

He's been told his whole life that what he has is a gift.

He's about to find out what it's been counting down to.

Seven parts. Read them in the dark.

A father whose body has always sensed trouble a few seconds early starts to notice the warnings arriving sooner, and stranger, and that his six-year-old daughter has begun to sense them too.
